somebody sat on my ibook screen and broke it. :(

not v. happy. I'm using it as a pc now, with one of richie's old monitors ... it's not so bad, and i don't feel inclined to replace the screen (which'll probably cost a lot) so I'll just have to stick with using my computer from in here. Meh.

last weekend I helped shupatra and her mum sell stuff at a stamp show. First time I've done a proper day's work in ages, haha. At first I wasn't exactly looking forward to talking to old women and selling them things, but after a while I got so bored I was sometimes trying to start conversations, haha. Still, felt good to help out, and I got paid. whee

We then went out on Monday to some French restaurant, which was pretty snazzy. Started out a little nervous -- felt weird formally dating again -- but it went well. Was the best night I've had in ages. :)

I bought an anthology on lit. criticism that arrived today and boy, is it huge. Full of Freud, Marx, Lacan, Foucalt, etc. Am gonna be even more full of crap over the next few months. Really enjoying English as a whole at the moment. Finding something worthwhile in every author we've come across, even though atm there seems to be a preoccupation with premature ejaculation within the canon.

so I'm back home for a couple days, 'cause it's my dad's birthday. my sister's gone a bit nuts, at the moment. her cat died a couple weeks ago and now she's quit her job and is hanging around with sixteen year olds. ??

i'm not sure whether this is some kind of midlife crisis. she's calling her boyfriend (the same age as her) a boring old fart and keeps trying to invite me and my brother with her to concerts. but she's only 25 anyway! so it's hardly midlife. (unless she keeps with teh hard drugs hahaha!)

seriously, though, she goes through these weird phases a lot, when she suddenly decides she hates my family, then she loves them then she hates them then blah blah. borderline personality or something i guess.

she has a cute kitten though (will upload pics later)

so amy came over and we helped shave her. that was a mighty fine time. louise told us that if richie ever shaved his armpit hair, she wouldn't let him in the house.

Richie thinks this Zelda character looks like me. I do not agree. However, I would like lj friends to vote on whether the brown thing on his head is his hat or his hair, as we are currently arguing over this.

I'm reading a book Amy's dad lent me called What Does a Martian Look Like? If any of you read Discworld, it's by the guys who write Science of Discworld, and it's basically about what aliens might be like! It's hard science, and discusses really weird possibilities, like lifeforms in stars, etc. I'll post about the more interesting stuff in it as I read along, though tonight I'm too lazy.

Was feeling a little weird earlier this evening so I went for a long walk and ended up at Amy's. She and I are now having sex on The Sims, which is bizarre. I want to get The Sims so I can make Richie fall in love with Louise virtually then have Sean impregnate her and have Richie get buttraped by aliens and discover his love of men and have him come onto Ian who in homophobic rage murders him and yesyesyes!!! *writes novel*

i am playing zelda ii: adventure of link at the moment and it reminds me how much easier modern games are. speaking of modern games, the nintendo wii is coming out soon! and let me say, i am very excited, despite them having some of the most retarded marketing angles ever. the wii will have a "family message center" where you can, well, leave messages for people. um? i'm just looking forward to sword-fighting with those bizarre remote controls.

but the campaign's just basically satire -- it focuses on ridiculous concerns rather than the problems tobacco actually causes. example, you're asked to rate this:

sean lent me the 10th kingdom, which i've been watching with amy. i really like it. though a lot of the storyline was fairly predictable some of the twists were totally unexpected, and it's a good mish-mash of fantasy tale and drama. really amusingly done -- wolf is awesome!

good luck to a friend of mine's cousin, who's direly ill at the moment and going for a risky operation. i'm not religious but i'm praying for her anyway.

amy and i are getting on better now. there have been a lot of fights and confusion, mostly because we expected things of one another and didn't say so, I think. but now we're more honest, I think, and are building up more trust in each other.

i think her counselling is going well, too, which i'm grateful for. but most of the change i think is down to her own efforts. she's become a lot more open and self-confident in the past couple weeks. :) thinking of you, honey x

I'm awful.

I was supposed to go back home yesterday morning, to work. But I didn't get up in time. So I was going to go in the afternoon. But frustrated so decided to leave it till this morning. But then didn't get up again!

BLARGH.

Oh well, money down the drain. not sure what to do now. doubt my boss will be pleased if i saunter in for one day, but my parents won't be pleased if i don't go in at all.

will probably zip down in a couple hours to say hello to the parents, then work friday and come up in the evening.

simon, when he was over, brought the new blind guardian album. I don't think it's very good. :( too many of the songs sound samey. that is, brief quiet then WAAAAUGUGGHGHHH!!!! epic screaming. weird how your music tastes change.

I saw A Scanner Darkly a couple days ago with shupatra. I love Philip K. Dick and I'm glad to say this is the third EXCELLENT movie adaptation of one of his books. If you haven't see it, do so now. It's REALLY good, with excellent dialogue, and an excellent storyline. And it's so trippy! hehe. Just expect to be confused -- this isn't a conventional movie.

The rotoscoping technique is also pretty interesting. They filmed the movie, then painted over the separate frames, to make it a super-realistic animation. It's really bizarre to watch.

oh dear lord

this guy has vanity published a book. if you don't know what vanity publishing is, it's when you can't get a book published on its own merits, so you pay a business to publish it for you. people do it so they can say "I've had a book published!" and hope nobody asks any questions about the publishing process.

the book is, by the way, utterly awful. you can find an extract from it here. oh, and don't forget his awesome artwork!

simon, peter and nick came down yesterday. simon has a tattoo now:

in order to punish him for such rashness we ordered him chinese food that gave him food poisoning and he was up all night on the toilet. waheeeey! on that note, don't order food from jumbo, as it arrives hours late, without all the stuff you ordered, and with a little extra bacteria as compensation

amy came over too and we played drinking games. the rules were you had to be gentlemanly, this translated to:

1) you had to say imbibe rather than drink
2) you could not point at somebody or use their real name (for some reason)
3) you had to drink with your left hand if you were right-handed & vice versa

if you broke a rule, you drank. i threw up my portion of the chinese early, which is perhaps why i was spared shitting the night away.

amy and i went to a taizé reunion meeting today. it was nice to see everyone again after so long, though i wasn't in much mood for chatter, as i've slept very poorly for the past two days. amy's orange juice didn't taste like normal orange juice according to her, so must be made from "special oranges". i also convinced her that a piece of bread with a hole in the middle of it was "donut bread" and expressed surprise she'd never had it before. lol

amy and i are pretty close friends at the moment, which is much nicer than the arguments we used to have. she's seeing her counsellor for the first time this thursday -- good luck, honey.

bbc is being yuckily politically correct again. whenever referring to mohammed on the islam section of their website, it's followed by "peace be upon him", apparently to show deference to islam:

terrorism is meant to be fear mongering, yeah? the idea of terrorist acts is to make people scared. tactically, they don't serve any purpose except that. islam extremists cannot pose any serious threat to america or britain.

why do our governments help with the fearmongering then? why do they treat homicides (sept 11) as acts of war? this question's been overasked, yeah, but it hasn't been answered.

terrorists and politicians seem to have something in common -- they both want the west to be terrified of the middle east.

i don't pretend to begin to understand an islam extremist's motivations behind terror attacks. i'm not sure what they stand to gain, except pissing off the "decadent west". america and britain's motivations seem far more obvious, though. for the sake of fear, every day, we're giving up on the libertarian spirit that we won for our countries in the social movements of the past couple decades. nobody needs to list these -- but i will anyway: american concentration camps, wiretapping, increased power for our countries' secret polices (terrorist act, patriot act, the mi5 doubling in size recently). id cards and security cameras (oh and roadside cameras that can now read licence plates) monitoring our position constantly across the country. our countries become more and more authoritarian every day. some people support this, saying, "oh, well, if you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear from id cards"

yes, because we all know how far we can trust the government

america recently held a truckdriver in guantanimo bay for several months under suspicions he was going to destroy a bridge using a blowtorch (yeah). even if you think our governments have the best intentions, you can't help but admit that they are incompetent. because they either lied to us about the wmds, or followed very bad intelligence reports. neither suggests we should give them larger amounts of power.

i'm not saying that terrorism isn't bad or scary. what i am saying is that the measures we're taking to prevent it aren't there to prevent it. they're there to give people who already have incredible power over our everyday lives even more. how are id cards going to prevent terrorism? terrorists who are here illegally aren't going to be carrying them. the ones who are here legally often live normal lives for several years before committing atrocities. we need to get perspective on this. we are being attacked by fringe lunatics. war is not going to stop them. it will if anything make them feel like martyrs, and they will decide they are more justified in their beliefs than ever before. we are not fighting a nation -- we are fighting an idea. and guns do not kill ideas.
